Shuttlecraft
A shuttlecraft is a short-range spacecraft, intended primarily for transport from a deep-space vessel to a planet's surface or for travel within a solar system. There are a variety of shuttlecraft types, and shuttlecrafts are widely used. Shuttlepods (a type of shuttlecraft) and some shuttlecraft are usually only capable of sublight speeds, while some shuttlecraft are modified for short warp speed travel. Almost all shuttles are capable of planetary landing and takeoff.
Shuttlecraft are also used when a transporter beam is not available or not appropriate. Some shuttlecraft are equipped with transporter beams for use in emergency evacuation in case of catastrophic damage to the shuttlecraft.
Althought there are occasional mishaps, shuttlecraft do not have the reliability of a transporter beam but are essential to any space faring civilization.
